The Plague Doctor mask is worn by the mysterious figure who leads the woman away following her speech at the secret ritual in Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 psychological thriller Eyes Wide Shut. Among the many strange and elaborate masks worn by the attendees, this distinctive design adds to the unsettling atmosphere of one of cinema’s most infamous scenes.
Rare for Kubrick, there’s actually a continuity error involving this guy. He is seen up on the balcony waiting to lead Mysterious woman away, and is also amongst the crowd down in the main hall during the same scene (unless there’s two of course).
Based upon the very real plague doctor masks worn by physicians during the black death of the 1700’s in Europe where they filled the beaks with aromatic herbs, spices, and dried flowers to create a makeshift air filter, the ventian design became a fan favourite of masquerade balls.
We’ve recreated this unusual mask in 3D, and now you can print your very own piece of Eyes Wide Shut memorabilia! Perfect for collectors, film enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by the mysterious world of Kubrick’s final film.
There are small hidden breathing holes at the very top of the beak.
Printed at 100% scale, the mask is designed to fit an average head of 60 cm circumference.
