Here we have one of the most recognisable and sinister masks from Stanley Kubrick's final masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut (1999). This is the distinctive gold mask worn by the mysterious Red Cloak, the Master of Ceremonies presiding over the infamous secret ritual and played by Leon Vitali.
But there's something particularly interesting about this mask. Have you ever noticed its striking resemblance to the legendary actor Peter Lorre?
Born in Hungary, Lorre became one of the most recognisable character actors of the mid-20th century, appearing in classics such as Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon. However, his most chilling and arguably greatest performance was in Fritz Lang's 1931 masterpiece M, where he played Hans Beckert, a deeply disturbed child murderer.
Interestingly, Kubrick's Red Cloak mask bears an uncanny resemblance to Lorre's facial features. And as Kubrick hand picked and designed each characters mask, some film enthusiasts believe this was entirely deliberate, suggesting a possible connection between Lorre's infamous role in M and the disturbing themes explored in Eyes Wide Shut.
Whether Kubrick intended this as a deeper cinematic reference or simply wanted to create an unsettling face is open to interpretation. Either way, it's a fascinating detail in an already mysterious film!
We've recreated this distinctive gold mask as a highly detailed 3D-printable model, capturing its unusual facial proportions and unmistakable expression.
Printed at 100% scale, the mask fits a head circumference of approximately 60cm.
