"What an excellent day for an exorcism."

I truly am sorry for this mask. This face haunts me to this day. True story: When I was growing up, Director William Friedkin’s and written by William Blatty’s The Exorcist was still banned in the UK from 1988 and wasn’t released again until 1999! You couldn’t even get a pirate copy VHS. We all grew up hearing about this fabled video nasty too extreme for audiences. Both my parents agreed it was indeed ‘the scariest horror film of all time’ and ‘you don’t want to see it.’ Being somewhat of a horror nut and largely desensitised to such things I of course, watched it as soon as it was available - but there had naturally been some tension building.

I was on my own. I was indeed finding it quite different to the usual horror trope but pretending (to myself) I wasn’t scared. I’m hard. Then something happened that will haunt me forever.

It got the bed shaking scene. And I swear to god my bed moved! Just a little bit. I ignored this of course, putting it down to imagined fear. Then some moments later, I heard a gigantic BANG! that sounded like a bulldozer had just hit the side of my house! Completely freaked out that that was undeniably real, there was a moment of silence again but, before I could even react, every single video and DVD I had on my shelves next to my bed (over a thousand) came flying off on top of me! And my bed and everything in the room started to violently shake! As you can imagine, I well and truly sh%t myself. Turned the film instantly off, ran into my mums bedroom waking her up and trying to tell her what happened. In her half awake state she wasn’t remotely interested and hadn’t even heard the huge bang, so I just asked if I could sleep in her room on the floor. I was 17! She said ‘Yeh, whatever’ no doubt weirded out by her almost adult son asking this. I laid there all night absolutely petrified trying to understand what was going on?

I woke up the next day… and there had been an earthquake of level 4 magnitude on the Richter scale in the north of the Uk! It was May 4th 1999, it’s on record. We don’t get earthquakes in Yorkshire! And of all the times that could have happened, and all the times I could have chosen to watch that film, it happened then - at precisely… precisely, the worst moment possible.

I don’t believe in co-incidence. I’m used to weird synchronicities, they’ve happened all my life, but that kind of specificity doesn’t just happen. That was manifested by fear. And whether we create these real happenings ourselves, or by way of an external force, as you can imagine, the film holds a particularly different place in my psyche. And for that reason, I still believe it is; the scariest horror film of all time.
